Abstract: 

One of the parameters involved in the amount of yeild of coal washing plants is the value of feed washability index. In the past, various indices have been introduced to qantify the washability of coals such as GWI (Govindarajan Wasability Index) and WINSA (Washability In the Neighborhood of the Setpoint Ash) and SWI (Salama Washability Index). Unfortunately, not all of these indices can completely meet all requirments of coal washing plants. One of the reasons is that these indices have been defined for the whole range of washability curves while in practice with regards to the custromer needs a specific part of the curve is of importance in processing. Hence, the trend of the curve out of this range does not have any effect on the operation performance. To cope with this issue, a new washability index called MWI (Majumder Wasability Index) was introduced which was based on the amount of material with the density near to the separation density. By means of this index the desired ash content of the concentrate and the optimum separation density for a given coal can be determined. Using the laboratory sink and float tests a rapid comparison of the washability of coals entering the Zarand coal washing plant in the size range of +1-10 mm was performed.
