Abstract:

Iranian Drug and Poison Information center, which was established in February 1997, founded undersecretary of Food & Drug, ministry of health. This center prepares pharmacological and toxicological information advice on the management of patients (Poisoning cases and others) to the general public and medical professionals by the telephone. The DPIC provides acquired information for 11 hours a day and 6 days per week by pharmacist or toxicologist. The center has received 66293 phone calls from Feb 1997 to Jul 2003, out of which 701 cases of poisoning were found. The poisoning cases analyzed and evaluated statistically regarding “distribution of age and gender, “out come of poisoning” and “cause of poisoning” to reveal the distinguishing features of intoxication. Sources of poisoning classified to six groups: Herbals, Medicines, Chemicals, Bites & sting and pesticides and Foods.  Most of the calls were from health care professional. Intoxication was mostly seen between the ages 18-30(23.6%) and males have been affected more than females (56%). Two patients died because of poisoning (0.3%). The Medicines were the main cause (54.6%) and chemical agents (24.5%) were the second cause of poisoning. By valuable drug identification, this center provides beneficial health service, reducing mortality and morbidity from poisoning and gives considerable financial saving to the community.
