Abstract: 

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: WE ASSESSED THE RESULT OF URINARY STONES COMPOSITION AND THEIR RELATIONSHIP TO GENDER, AGE, STONE, WEIGHT, STONE LOCATION AND COLOR.
METHODS: FROM 6.19.99 TO 1.24.2001, 209 PATIENTS WITH URINARY STONES WHO UNDERWENT OPEN LITHOTOMY ENROLLED IN A PROJECTIVE STUDY. THIS STUDT WAS CONDUCTED IN 2 UNIVERSITIES, ONE TEHRAN UNIVERSITY OF MEDICAL SCIENCE (SINA HOSPITAL) WHICH ACCEPTED PATIENTS FROM ALL PARTS OF IRAN AND THE OTHER IN NORTH WEST PART OF IRAN, URIMA UNIVERSITY OF MEDICAL SCIEVCS. THE STONES COMPOSITIONS WERE ANALYSED BY INFRARED SPECTROSCOPY (IN MED EINRICHTUNGEN DER UNIVERSITAT BONN). THE RESULTS WERE ANALYZED WITH PAIRED TEST.
RESULTS: THE PATIENTS WERE 121 MALE AND 88 FEMALE. THE AVERAGE AGE WAS 40.4 YRS (4-78) AND 42.5YRS (3-85) FOR MEN AND WOMEN RESPECTIVELY. OVERALL THE AVERAGE AGE WAS 42.15 YRS (3-85). FORTY FOUR PATIENTS WERE FROM URIMA UNIVERSITY (16 FEMALES AND 28 MALES). AVERAGE STONE WEIGHT WAS 4.28G WITH 3.95 IN FEMALES IN AND 4.53 IN MALES. MEAN STONE NUMBERS WAS 4.33 ACCOUNTING FROM 1 TO 20. AMONG THESE 209 STONES, 27 (12.9%) WERE PURE STONES (CARBONATE APATITE:1, BRUSHITE:1, URATE:15, CYSTINE:3, WEDDELLITE:5, MONO–NH4–URATE:1, STEUVITE:1). 182 WERE MIXED STONES (87%), NONE OF THEM CONTAINED OCTA–CA–PHOSPHATE, APATITE, NEW BERYE, 2, 8 DIHYDROXYADENINE, MONO-NA-URATE AND XANTHINE AT ALL 77% OF STONES HAD A COMPONENT OF WEDDLITE IN THEIR STRUCTURE. IN NEARLY 26% OF STONES, IT COMPRISES MORE THAN 50% OF STONES. 78% OF STONES HAD WHEWELLITE CRYSTALS IN THEIR STRUCTURE. IN 46% OF CASES, WHEWELLITE COMPRISES MORE THAN 50% OF STONES WE COULD FIND OTHER COMPONENTS AS FOLLOWS: (TABLE 1-1) CONCLUSION: ALTHOUGH THERE IS NO COMPEREHENSIVE STUDY TO DETERMINE UROLITHIASIS INCIDENCE AND PREVALENCE IN IRAN, BUT REGARDING THIS STUDY, WE CAN CONCLUDE THAT WEDDELITE AND WHEWELLITE ARE MOST COMMON COMPONENTS OF UROLITHIASIS IN IRAN. THERE WAS NO SIGNIFICANT DEFFERENCE BETWEEN STONE COMPOSITIONS IN BOTH TEHRAN AND URMIA UNIVERSITY PATIENTS.
