Abstract:

PURPOSE: MALIGNANT TUMORS OF THE TESTIS ARE MORE RARE THAN OTHER CANCERS. WE DETERMINED THE INCIDENCE OF TUMORS OF THE TESTIS IN GILAN PROVINCE TO HELP FOR BETTER KNOWLEDGE OF TESTIS CANCERS.
MATERIALS & METHODS: BETWEEN 1994 AND 2000, 66 TUMORS OF THE TESTIS THAT WERE REPORTED, WERE ENTERED INTO THE STUDY. PATIENTS AGE, THE SIDE OF INVOLVEMENT, HISTOLOGIC TYPES WERE ASSESSED.
RESULTS: THE MOST COMMON TYPES OF THE TUMORS WERE AS THE FOLLOWING: SEMINOMA ACCOUNTED FOR 42.4% (28 CASES), MIXED CELL TYPE FOR 19.6% (13 CASES), EMBRYONAL CARCINOMA FOR 12.1% (8 CASES), TERATOCARCINOMA FOR 10.6% (7 CASES), HTMPHOMA FOR 7.5% (5 CASES) AND YOLK SAC TUMORS FOR 3% (2 CASES) OF THE TUMORS.
THE MAJORITY OF THESE TUMORS OCCURRED BETWEEN 25 AND 39 YEARS OLD (51.3%) THE TUMORS WAS SLIGHTLY MORE COMMON ON THE RIGHT SIDE (39%) THAN ON THE LEFT SIDE (37.8%).
CONCLUSIONS: INCIDENCE OF TESTICULAR CANCER INCREASED BETWEEN 1994 AND 2000. IN THIS STUDY THE INCIDENCE OF SEMINOMA, MIXED CELL TYPE AND SYMPTOM IS HIGHER THAN THE INCIDENCE OF WESTERN COUNTRIES.
