Abstract:

PROPOSE: TO ASSESS SAFETY AND EFFICACY OF ESWL IN PEDIATRIC POPULATION.
METHODS & MATERIALS: THE FILES OF 120 PATIENTS (0-12 YEARS), IN ESWL WARD IN IMAM KHOMEINI HOSPITAL OF TABRIZ WERE ANALYSED RETROSPECTIVELY. THE LOCATION OF STONES WERE RIGHT OR LEFT KIDNEY AND ALL OF THEM HAD BEEN UNDERGONE ESWL WITH SIEMENS LITHOSTAR APPARATUS. THE PATIENTS WERE RE-EVALUATED WITH KUB AND SONOGRAPHY 3 MONTHS AFTER ESWL.
RESULTS: THE SUCCESS RATE OF ESWL WAS 81.2%. 29.2% (35 CASES) OF PATIENTS WERE ANESTHETIZED BY KETAMINE HCL FOR MORE COOPERATION. LONG TERM RESULTS OF ESWL (5 YEARS) WERE ALSO ANALYZED IN 48 CHILDREN. THE RATE OF STONE FORMATION IN STONE FREE GROUP WAS 29.1% (14 CASES) AND MOST OF STONES HAD BEEN FORMED IN LOWER RENAL CALYXES (16.6% OR 8 CASES).
DISCUSSION & CONCLUSION: BECAUSE THE ESWL IS A NONINVASIVE METHOD AND HAVE FAVORABLE RESULTS, IT SEEMS TO BE THE FIRST CHOICE FOR RENAL STONES IN PEDIATRIC AGE GROUP.
