Abstract:

PURPOSE: OUR AIM WAS TO EXPLAIN THE TESTICULAR EFFECT OF THE MUSTARD GAS.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: EIGHTY ONE SULFUR MUSTARD CASUALTIES WITH THE PRESENTING SYMPTOM OF INFERTILITY UNDERWENT EVALUATION OF THEIR REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEMS. THREE SEMEN ANALYSES, SERUM HORMONAL AND TESTOSTERONE AND GENITAL EXAMINATIONS WERE COMPLITED FOR ALL, AS WELL AS TESTICULAR BIOPSIES IN 24.
RESULTS: AZOOSPERMIA AND SEVER OLIGOSPERMIA WERE DIAGNOSED IN 42.5% AND 57.5% RESPECTIVELY. HORMONE STUDIES REVEALED ELEVATED PLASMA FSH LEVEL AND NORMAL PLASMA LUTEINIZING HORMONE AND TESTOSTERONE CONCENTRATIONS. TESTICULAR BIOPSY SHOWED SELECTIVE ATROPHY OF THE GERMINAL EPITHELIUM, INTACT SERTOLI CELLS, AND A NORMAL APPEARANCE OF LEYDIG CELLS.
CONCLUSIONS: MUSTARD GAS CAN CAUSE DEFECTIVE SPERMATOGENESIS YEARS AFTER EXPOSURE.
