Abstract:

PROPOSE: TO INCREASE AWARENESS AND UNDERSTANDING OF THE PUTATIVE ROLE OF BPH (BENIGN PROSTATIC HYPERPLASIA) IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF BLADDER DIVERTICULA AND TO COMPARE CYSTOSCOPY AND CYSTOGRAPHY IN DETECTING BLADDER DIVERTICULA.
METHODS & MATERIALS: DURING A 4- MONTH PERIOD, ALL PATIENTS WITH BPH, WHO WERE ADMITTED IN THE SHAHID BEHESHTI HOSPITAL OF SHIRAZ UNIVERSITY OF MEDICAL SCIENCES, WERE EXAMINED BY CYSTOSCOPY AND AMONG THESE PATIENTS, RANDOMLY 31 PATIENTS WERE ALSO EXAMINED BY CYSTOGRAPHY.
RESULTS: THROUGH THIS RESEARCH, THE RATE OF BLADDER DIVERTICULA IN PATIENTS WITH BPH WAS GAHERED; BESIDES, THIS RESEARCH ILLUSTRATED THAT THERE WAS NO DEFINITE CORRELATION BETWEEN BLADDER DIVERTICULA AND THE AGE OF THE PATIENTS IN SPITE OF A SLIGHTLY INCREASE IN THE RATE OF BLADDER DIVERTICULA FROM OUR FIRST GROUP TO THE LAST ONE. THIS RESEARCH ALSO DEPICTED THAT THE DETECTION RATE OF CYSTOGRAPHY IN DIVERTICULA OF URINARY BLADDER WAS MUCH GREATER THAN THAT OF CYSTOSCOPY.
DISCUSSION & CONCLUSION: TREATMENT OF BPH, EITHER MEDICALLY OR SURGICALLY, CAN INCREASE THE URINARY FLOW; THEN THE FORCE, WHICH PATIENTS NEED FOR URINATION, AND SUBSEQUENTLY, THE INTRABLADDER PRESSURE IN URINATION PERIOD ARE DECREASED SIGNIFICANTLY. THEREAFTER, THE RATE OF BLADDER DIVERTICULA IN THESE PATIENTS IS DECREASED. THIS WAY, THE COMPLICATIONS OF DIVERTICULA SUCH AS INFECTIONS, STONES, AND CANCERS ARE LIMITED EXPONENTIALLY. BESIDES, THE EARLY DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT OF BLADDER DIVERTICULA CAN PREVENT THE INCIDENCE OF COMPLICATIONS OF THEM.
