Abstract:

PURPOSE: THERE IS NO REPORT TO DOCUMENT HOW MANY TIME ESWL COULD BE REPEATED IN SINGLE KIDNEY STONE. IT SEEMS THAT PREVIOUS ESWL IS IMPORTANT IN RESULT OF ESWL METHODS & MATERIALS: WE USED ESWL TO TREAT SOLITARY STONE IN KIDNEY BETWEEN 1377 TO 1381 IN KHATAM HOSPITAL IN ZAHEDAN WITH GENSTON 1300 MACHINE. STONE SIZE WAS 19.31 MILIMETERS, LOCATING IN DIFFERENT CULYCES OR PELVIC. IF AFTER 2 WEEKS IN KUB THERE WAS NO RESIDUAL STONE BIGGER THAN 5 MM, ESWL EVALUATED AS SUCCESSFUL.
RESULTS: IN THE FIRST TRIAL OF ESWL, SUCCESS RATE WAS %61. THE BEST FOR PELVIC STONES AND WORST IN LOWER CALYX STONES.
IN THE SECOND TRIAL, SUCCESS WAS %10 AND IN THE TRIAL TIME NO SUCCESS DETECTED.
CONCLUSION: ESWL SUCCESS RATE DECREASES SHARPLY AFTER PREVIOUS FAILED TRIALS. AFTER TWO SESSIONS OF SHOCK WAVES, NO SUCCESS IS EXPECTED FOR THE FUTURE SESSIONS. IT SEEMS, IF THE FIRST ESWL IS FAILED, WE SHOULD LOOK FOR OTHER TREATMENT OPTIONS
