Abstract: 

Gotvand Dam and Hydroelectric Power Plant (H.E.P.P) is one of the biggest dam construction project in Iran. This Rock fill dam is under construction in south west of Iran on Karun River. Total volume of dam body is about 26 million cubic meters and most of it is Rock fill material. Production of Rock fill material is accomplished with excavation of left abutment of dam and spillway foundation. The method of excavation is drilling and blasting. According to technical specifications, Rock fill material must be in a designated range of grain size. Therefore blasting operation is very sensitive and important in this project. This paper describes the procedures of designing of drilling and blasting pattern for this project. In this inspection, at first five blasting pattern with different charge and geometry was designed. Then by inspection of each blasting result and recording the important parameters (like structure of blasting walls, fly of rock, amount of boulders, secondary blasting if it's necessary and etc.) and comparing the produced material size with backfilling grain size distribution sheet, the best blasting pattern was achieved.
