Abstract: 

Based on previous studies and investigations, one of the important issues in soils polluted by oil contaminants, is the entrapment of pollutants within soil particles. In some of these cases, even after soil remediation, the pollutant has been appeared again in the soil matrix or in the groundwater system. In many of these cases the main factor is the trapped oil that is around the clay lenses. In this study, a laboratory experiment has been carried out to investigate the influence of clay lenses onto the soil and water pollution. In addition, a numerical model, MOFAT, was used to compare the results obtained from experiment and numerical model. Both physical and numerical models provided a better understanding of the physical behavior of multi-phase flow in the unsaturated zone and the model was verified against a heterogeneous case.
