Abstract: 

Sungun Copper mine tailings dam consist of main dam, rock fill toe and seepage control dam. Embankment will constructed by coarse part of the tailings from concentrator .Part coarse tailings includes sands whit the size of more than 75 μm. The height of the dam increases continuously over the years such that the final height of the dam will become more than 170 m.
In order to make it possible to discharge and store tailings in first year of the mine life, starter dam will be made with rock fill materials .The height of the dam is 64 m. The upstream of the dam will be made of less permeable clay; a cutoff trench will joins these materials to the bed rock. There is a seepage control dam in the downstream of the starter dam. Starter dam will be filled during second year of the mine life and sand embankment will act as the downstream of main dam.
Although, at foundation and abutments and final district of the starter dam drainage trenches have been designed that will be filled with filter and drain materials. A rock fill toe has also considered at the downstream end of sand embankment (height 72 m) in order to provide full drain and suitable stability of the sand embankment.
There will be seepage water dam at downstream of the rock fill toe dam. The objective and function of this dam is to collect and store seepage water of the tailings dam and drainages system (height 10 m). This water will be pumped back to the main dam.
