Abstract: 

Heap leaching construction usually involves a large area, approximately one square kilometer, covered by a succession of natural and artificial layers. A layer of gravel bearing a high coefficient of permeability is laid above the former layers. Subsequently, copper oxide soil is placed above the layers to be leached. Acid dissolves the copper content, leaches down through the drainage system and transfers to the leaching plant. The resultant pregnant liquid solution will then be treated so as to separate and retain the copper. The remaining acid is returned to the system to continue with the leaching process. In certain cases the drainage system of the heap leaching structure is chosen incorrectly and/or with the elapse of time, due to clogging of the gravel the system activity is disrupted. Under these circumstances, the total acid inflow is greater than that of the total acidic discharge. This causes an increase in the acidic level of the heap which in turn produces severe problems in the hydro-metallurgy process. Such a situation occurred in the heap leaching structure 1 at Sarcheshmeh copper mine. However, if a similar situation were to occur in the heap leaching structure 2, it would cause an inevitable landslide. Due to these circumstances, the choice of an adequate drainage system is required for the heap leaching structure.
In this paper, after a brief introduction of the heap leaching system, the design of the drainage systems for these structures will be developed. Finally, an adequate drainage system for the heap leaching structure 2 at Sarcheshmeh copper mine will be proposed.
