Abstract: 

Based on the existing theories concerning 3D effects of the tunnel face and its deformation, this research investigates the deformations in the rock mass after excavation, for different strength parameters and different excavation radii, using finite element 2D models. Pertaining results have been used in correlating the tunnel face deformation with the preliminary active stress percentage. This procedure allows for considering three-dimensional conditions of the tunnel face in 2D models, with an appropriate percentage of the media stress, defined. Desirable effects of this idea have been finally taken into a simple technical and economical assessment.
