Abstract: 

Natural geomechanical properties of rocks are inherently variable so geotechnical engineers are unavoidably faced with decision making under uncertainty. To address uncertainty involved in a tunnel design, the authors use the popular uncertainty analysis techniques (Monte Carlo method). The model is executed automatically to address the uncertainty involved in a water supply tunnel supporting design. The combination of five effective parameters on the support tunnel distribution obtained from the Monte Carlo method can provide useful information about the potential failure supporting of the tunnel. Results show that the reliability of the tunnel is greater than 0.9995.
