Abstract: 

Iron ore is the main raw material used in iron and steel making plants in granulated or concentrated forms, depending on relevant production processes. At present, some large iron ore deposits of our country are being exploited so as to meet the current demands, but with respect to the plans for enhancement of steel production capacity in future, it would be necessary to make use of other iron ore deposits by prospecting, conducting explorations and extracting of mines, using different processes such as Direct Reduction, Blast Furnace and other current methods depending on the quality of the materials. Chahgaz, Zarand and Saghand mines are located in the region of iron ore deposits of Bafgh district and are supposed to be utilized for the future expansion plans of steel industries. The investigations and tests performed on these deposits show that they contain sulfur-magnetite combinations. The studies made for making use of classified ores of above-mentioned mines for production of sinter, their desulphurization coefficient while sintering and evaluation of their quality as compared with Choghart’s (Bafgh) iron ore, indicate that: Chaghaz iron ore mine, containing up to 0.18% phosphorous and minimum iron content of 60%, can be used in production of sinter required for blast furnaces and can bring about better smelting specifications than the iron ores of Bafgh mine. However, the sulfurous iron ores of Zarand and Saghand mines cannot be used in iron and steel making plants unless they are beneficiated and processed primarily.
