Abstract:

INTRODUCTION: OBESITY IS ONE OF THE MAJOR HEALTH PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH THE SERIOUS CHRONIC DISEASES SUCH AS CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASES AND DIABETES. FOXTAIL MILLET (SETARIA ITALICA) THAT BELONGS TO THE POACEAE FAMILY HAS BEEN RECOGNIZED FOR HIGH FIBER AND PROTEIN CONTENT. IT IS EFFECTIVE FOR IMPROVING LIPID METABOLISM. IN THIS STUDY, WE EVALUATED THE EFFECT OF HYDRO ALCOHOLIC EXTRACT OF FOXTAIL MILLET ON WEIGHT AND BLOOD BIOCHEMICAL PARAMETERS IN MALE WISTAR RATS.
METHODS: THIS STUDY WAS CONDUCTED ON 50 MALE WISTAR RATS WITH AN AVERAGE WEIGHT OF 300G. THEY WERE UNDER DIET CONTAINING 4% ADDED FAT FOR ONE MONTH, THEN DIVIDED INTO 5 GROUPS OF 10 INCLUDING: NORMAL DIET, OBESE DIET, AND OBESITY DIET ALONG WITH 200 & 400 MG/KG FOXTAIL MILLET EXTRACT AND VENUSTAT, RANDOMLY. WEIGHT OF RATS WERE RECORDED IN THE BEGINNING, AT THE END OF THE SECOND, FOURTH, SIXTH AND EIGHTH WEEK. FASTING BLOOD SUGAR, TRIGLYCERIDES, PLASMA LEVELS OF TOTAL CHOLESTEROL, SERUM LIVER ENZYMES AND FAT IN FECES WERE MEASURED AT THE BEGINNING AND END OF THE STUDY.
RESULTS: FOXTAIL MILLET EXTRACT IN BOTH DOSES COMPARED TO FAT CONTROL, SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED WEIGHT (P<0.05). THE EFFECT OF FOXTAIL MILLET ON FASTING BLOOD SUGAR LOWERING, TRIGLYCERIDE AND CHOLESTEROL WAS ALSO SIGNIFICANT (P<0.05). FOXTAIL MILLET HAD NO EFFECT ON LIVER ENZYME AST COMPARED TO THE CONTROL GROUP.
CONCLUSION: THIS STUDY INDICATES THAT HYDROALCOHOLIC EXTRACT OF FOXTAIL MILLET AT DOSES OF 200 AND 400 MG/KG CAUSED REDUCTION IN WEIGHT AND FASTING BLOOD SUGAR. SO, IT MAY BE A NEW AND EFFECTIVE MEDICINE FOR THE TREATMENT OF OBESITY AND DIABETES.
