Abstract:

Hypericum perforatum has been used in folk medicine to improve mental performance. In the present study, we investigated the effect of chronic treatment with Hypericum perforatum extract (6, 12 and 25 mg/kg, p.o.) on cognition function using two behavioral models of learning and memory.
Passive avoidance learning and elevated plus maze tests were performed 30 days after extract treatment. Extract administration (12 and 25mg/kg) improved learning and memory of rats during both tests. However, administration of extract at the dose of 6 mg/kg did not alter cognition function in treated compared to untreated animals. Hypericum treatment did not affect on the body of treated animals. Antioxidant properties as well as Hypericuminduced central cholinergic facilitation might partly explain the memory improving effects of Hypericum extract.
These results show that chronic treatment of Hypericum perforatum improves learning and memory of rats using two standard models of learning and memory. As Hypericum extract would be free of major side effects compared to other nootropic medications, it may provide a new potential alternative for demented patients.
