Abstract:

Many studies have been suggested that estrogen can improve learning and memory and it delays the onset of neurological disorders such as, alzheimer's disease. So, the decline in estrogen concentration in post menopausal women causes decrease of life quality and numerous disorders including dysfunction in memory. Whether estrogen replacement therapy can improve cognition and memory functions in postmenopausal women is however a matter controvercy, on the other hand breast cancer is the commeon side effect of hormone therapy. Some studies have been investigated effects of soy phytoestrogens such as genistein on cognition functions. However, very few studies have looked at the effects, of total soy extract on learning and memory. So we decided to study the effect of total soy extract on spatial memory.
Material & methods: in this study 100 female rat were allocated randomly to 5 groups: 1) controle, 2) sham, 3) test-1 (ovariectomized), 4) test-2 (tot soy extract) and 5) tamoxifen. The animals of test-2 and tamocsifen groups received 60mg/kg per day total soy extract in drinking water by gavage for spatial memory. The time to reach the platform (latency), the length of swimming path and swim speed were recorded automatically by a video tracking system.
The results showed that ovariectomy impaired spatial memory (p<0.05) and oral administration of total soy extract ameliorated learning and spatial memory deficits of ovariectomized rats. This study indicated that ingestion of total soy extract had positive effect on spatial memory especially in postmenopausal period.
