Abstract: 

Type 2 diabetes is a metabolic disorder caused by relative insufficiency of insulin secretion and covering 90–95% of all diabetes cases. As Olea europaea L. has long been used in Iran as a hypoglycemic agent. In the current study, the effect of Olea europaea L. extract on hepatic toxicity in sucrose-induced diabetes in female rats was investigated. 24 adult female Wistar rats weighting 150-200g were used. After administration of 32% sucrose in drinking water for 6 weeks, the animals were randomly divided into 4 groups: control, sucrose-induced (sham), aqueous (250mg/kg) and hydro-alcoholic (250 mg/kg) extracts of Olea europaea L. 48 hours after the last gavage, blood was collected from heart, serum was separated and indices of hepatic dysfunction parameters including the activity of alkalines phosphatases (ALP) and alanine transaminases (ALT) were determined. The ALP activity in sucrose, aqueous and hydro-alcoholic groups were significantly higher than normal control rats and the ALT activity in hydro-alcoholic group rats was significantly higher than normal control rats. When sucrose-induced diabetic female rats were treated with aqueous and hydro-alcoholic extracts of Olea europaea L., ALP and ALT activities did not change. Thus, in current study Olea europaea L.extract is not recommened for decreasing the activity of hepatic parameters.
