Abstract: 

Zolpidem is an antidepressant and hypnotic. According to the literature, excessive use of this medicine can affect the hepatic metabolism, and therefore this medicine is used in rats to find out about the function of liver enzymes. In this research, 50 male mature rats from Wistar strain with the weight of 200±10 were used in the experiment, control 1 and control 2 groups. The experimental group was divided into 3 subgroups and the medicine was given to them orally for 21 days at doses of 150, 300 and 450 mg/kg. 0.2 ml of distilled water was given to control 1 group, but the control 2 group did not receive anything. After 21 days, blood samples were taken from the cardiac ventricles, the enzymes ALP, AST, and ALT measured and the results analyzed by Tukey statistical test. The results obtained from this experiment show that ALP, AST, and ALT in the experiment group had a significant increase compared to control groups (p<0.05). It also showed a significant decrease in the weight of the experimental group 3 compared to control groups. The results of this research show that Zolpidem causes damages to the liver which is mainly due to production of alcohol. It also damages the hepatic tissue and increases ALP, AST, and ALT in the liver.
