Abstract: 

One of the most effective drugs in treatment of hyperprolactinemia is cabergoline, which is a potent dopaminergic drug. In the present study, the effect of this drug on pituitary-thyroid axis hormones was examined. The experiments were conducted on five groups including 8 male rats. Experimental groups received 0.1, 0.5, or 1 mg/kg, sham group only received distilled water, and control group received none. Cabergoline was injected subcutaneously over a period of 14 days. At the end of the experiment, blood samples were taken and concentrations of TSH, T3 and T4 were measured by RIA. Data were analyzed using Duncan and t.test. p<0.05 was considered significant. Results showed that the mean concentration of T3 increased significantly in the experimental group receiving low-dose cabergoline. In addition, the levels of T4 and TSH increased significantly in all experimental groups. According to the results of this research, cabergoline causes a dramatic decrease in thyroid function. Cabergoline directly activates D2 dopamine receptors on pituitary thyrotropes, thereby inhibiting TSH secretion and decreasing thyroid hormones.
