Abstract:

Clinically, androgenic drugs are prescribed as a replacement therapy in men and also in some gynecologic problems. However, abuse of synthetic anabolic steroids in athletes can lead to unpredictable effects. The goal of the present study was to examine the effects of testosterone enantate administration during pregnancy on the fetal development in Wistar rat. After mating, pregnant rats were divided into control and 3 experimentalgroups 1, 2 and 3. At day 5 post-gestation, the pregnant rats of experimental groups 1, 2 and 3 received a single injection (i.m.) of 2, 4 or 6 mg testosterone enantate, respectively. On the 20th day of pregnancy and after the collection of blood samples for testosterone assay, all pregnant rats were sacrificed, their fetuses (aborted, dead and alive) were removed, counted and examined under stereomicroscope for major abnormalities. The results of statistical analysis showed significant differences between the maternal testosterone level, the number of aborted and/or dead fetuses and also alive fetal weights. It seems that the abuse of androgenic compounds, especially during pregnancy, by elevating the androgen level can increase the incidence of fetal abortion and mortality rates.
