Abstract:

Humulus Lupulus L. is a plant from cannabinaceac family which is grown in some parts of Iran. The present study aimed at examining the effects of hydro alcoholic extract (H .extract) of this plant on spermatogenesis, sperm motility and body weight gain in male rats.
Rats were randomly assigned to 7 groups (n=10 each). Control (no treatment), vehicle for H .extract (25% tween 80o solution, 1 ml/kg/day), vehicle for Di Ethyl Stilbestrol (DES) (olive oil 1 ml/kg/day), hydro alcoholic extract ofHumulus Lupulus L.(H) at 50, 150 or 450 mg/kg/day and (DES) (100μg/Kg BW) for 7 weeks. After experiments, left epididymal cauda cut and kept in saline for sperm count and motility. The results were analyzed by one way- ANOVA statistical method (p<0.05 was significant).
Body weight in rats receiving estradiol was decreased significantly although Sperm motility was decreased in groups receiving H150 or H450. No significant difference was observed in sperm count of all groups.
Estradiol probably changed the absorption/ metabolism ratio which may account for decrease in body weight. It seems that sperm motility rather than spermatogenesis has been affected by H. extract.
