Abstract: 

RFamid-related peptide (RFRP) has been known as a key inhibitory of Gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) secretion. Ewe has estrous cycles comprising of two follicular and luteal phases. The latter is further divided into proestrous and estrous phases. Blood level of GnRH increases and decreases in follicular and luteal phases, respectively. RFRP has been shown to inhibit GnRH secretion. The aim of this study was to test whether the level of RFRP expression in the preopric area (POA) increase in luteal phase. Three ewes in each phase (n=9) selected and level of RFRP expression in each phase was examined by using immunonohistochemistry method. Results showed that number of RFRP neurons increased in luteal phase in comparison with proestrous or estrous phases (P<0.01). These data imply that RFRP or gonadotropin inhibitory hormone (GnIH) neurons in luteal phase mediate negative feedback effects of progesterone on GnRH neurons that in turn decrease Luteinizing hormone secretion.
