Abstract: 

Introduction: Ionizing radiation is used in the diagnosis and treatment of human diseases but chronic exposure to it would be hazardous due to its mutagenic and carcinogenic effects. On the other hands ionizing radiation causes oxidative stress by inducing the generation of reactive oxygen species, and reducing the antioxidant defense system. In this study the effect of lemon balm on enzymes antioxidant is evaluated.
Methods: This clinical trial study was performed on 54 radiology staff. They were asked to complete a questionnaire based on study criteria and then were asked to drink 3gr of lemon balm decoction per day for 30days.In the blood, Catalase , Superoxide dismutase, myleoperoxidase and glutathione peroxidase activity was measured by cayman kit befor and after using lemon balm decoction. The results were analyzed with the use descriptive analysis (such as mean, deviation standard) and analytic analysis (such as paired-test).
Results: Mean and diversion of Catalase, Superoxide dismotase and glutathione peroxidase activity befor using lemon balm were in this manner: 29.09±16.72nmol/min/ml, 0.66±0.3U/ml, 100.53±23.99nmol/min/ml and after using lemon balm decoction were in this manner: 46.89±20.52, 1.13±0.6, 112.57±25.95.p Value were in this manner:0.038, 0.021, 0.0001.
Results: Using lemon balm causes increasing enzymes antioxidant activity, therefore recommended to be used as a dietary supplement for radiation protection.
