Abstract: 

Artichoke with the scientific name of Cynara scolymus is a plant from Compositae family. It is stabilized the effect of Cynara scolymus in regeneration and reconstruction of hepatic tissue. In this research, it was investigated the effect of hydroalcoholic extract of artichoke on the injered pancreas tissue. 20 adult male rats, weighing 200-250 gr, were used in four groups of five each. Rats in the first group (control), received physiological serum equal to injecting material volume. Rats in the second group (diabetic) induced diabetes with 120 mg/kgbw dose of alloxan monohydrate. Third group (diabetic + glibenclamide) received 0/5 mg/kgbw glibenclamide after induction of diabetes. Fourth group (diabetic + cynara scolymus) received 300 mg/kgbw dose of cynara scolymus hydroalchoholic extract.
Prescribing materials in all groups was done as intra peritoneal (IP) injection. Histomorphological investigation of pancreatic islets showed that the size of pancreatic islets and total number of islet cells is different among the experimental groups. The investigating factors have significant reduction in diabetic group compared to control group (P<0.05). State of the treated group with glibenclamide was similar to diabetic group (P>0.05). The investigating factors have significantly increased in the treated group with cynara scolymus extract (P<0.05).
This research indicates that using of cynara scolymus extract could be effective on regeneration of injured pancreatic islets in diabetic rats. Probably this effect related to antioxidant compounds in extract. The extract of cynara scolymus increases the rate of cell proliferation. It seems that increase in islet size and cell number is result of remainder cells proliferation in islets.
