Obesity is a predisposing factor for incidence of diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular diseases. Obesity is a consequence of excessive calorie intake. In traditional medicine, Teucrium polium and especially its ethyl acetate extract (EAE) have been known as anti diabetic and antioxidant agent. At present study, effect of EAE has been investigated on food intake and obesity in rats.
30 male wistar rats in five groups (in exception of control group) had free access to water, rat chow and 50% sucrose solution for six week. Then EAE 50, 100, 200 mg/kg/day were given orally for 14 day respectively. In the end total food and total calorie intake were measured, then rats were scarified and final body weight, body weight gain, organs and visceral fat pad were measured. Total food and calorie intake had no significant difference among groups (p>0.05). There was no any significant difference among body and organ weight of all groups, meanwhile, in group has received 200mg EAE, body weight gain and visceral fat pad weight were significantly decreased in comparison with control group.
This study presents that EAE of Teucrium polium has anti obesity effect in rats.
