Abstract:

Citrus aurantium L. has been suggested to have several actions in CNS. Beneficial effects of Citrus aurantium on anxiety and its sedative effects have been reported. In the present study the effect of hydroalcoholicextract of Citrus aurantium on (penetylenetetrazole) PTZ inducedseizures in mice was evaluated.
Fourty male mice were divided into four groups: 1) Control, 2) EXP 1, 3) Exp 2, 4) EXP 3. The latencies to minimal clonic seizures (MCS) and generalized tonic-clonic seizures (GTCS) after injection of PTZ, (90 mg/kg; i.p) was recorded. The animals of Exp 1, Exp 2 and Exp 3 were treated by 100, 500 and 1000 mg/kg of hydroalcoholic extract of Citrus aurantium before injection of PTZ. The animals of control group received 10 ml/kg of saline instead of extract.
There was A significant increase in MCS latencies of Exp 2 and Exp 3 groups in comparison with control group (p<0.01 and P<0.05). The GTCS latencies of all three experimental groups was increased compared with control group (P<0.05)
It is concluded that hydroalcoholic extract of Citrus aurantium affects seizures thresholds induced-by PTZ but further investigations need to be done to elucidate the mechanism (s).
