Abstract: 

Medicinal plants reduce the risk of chronic disease such as diabetes. Therefore investigation on traditional medicinal plants has become more important. So, in this study the effect of alcoholic extract of Daucus carota seeds on serum level of glucose, cholesterol and triglyceride was investigated in type I diabetic rats.
Diabetes was induced in male Wistar rats by injection of 70mg/kg,i,p of streptozotocin (STZ). Five days after injection of STZ blood samples were collected from cavernousa sinus of eye for measurement of glucose, cholesterol and triglyceride. Glycemia was determined by using glucometer and diabetes was confirmed in rats having FBS level above 250mg/dl. Diabetic rats received 200mg/kg/day Daucus carota seeds extract daily for 6 days by gavage. After 6 days they sacrificed by decapitation and fasting blood samples were collected from cervical vein for measuring factors.
Serum level of FBS, cholesterol and triglyceride significantly increased in diabetic rats compared with normal rats. Administration of extract significantly decreased FBS, cholesterol and triglyceride levels.
Using Daucus carota seeds extract significantly decreased blood glucose, cholesterol and triglyceride in diabetic rats, therefore using this extract may improve diabetes.
