Abstract:

In traditional system of medicine several herbal preparation are used for liver disease. To investigate the effect of Cynara scolymus leaves, Cichorium intybus roots extract against carbon tetrachloride liver toxicity in rats.
Three dosages of 10, 20 and 30 times of human dosage (THD) of C. scolymus leaves and C. intybus roots extract were prepared. Of total 80 male Wistar rats 10 kept as normal group and liver intoxication were induced in other 70 rats by intra peritoneal injection of carbon tetrachloride. The intoxicated rats were divided to 7 groups of 10 rats each. One group serve as control and 6 groups received each herbal extract. At the end of the study serum ALT, AST and ALP levels, liver tissue glutathione and catalase activity, and microvesicular steatosis (MS) and pericentral coagulation necrosis (PCN) were determined in all groups. In C. scolymus, C. intybus treated groups at 30 THD the serum ALT, AST and ALP were significantly reduced, the liver MS were also inhibited significantly in both herbal treated groups, but PCN inhibited significantly in C. scolymus group only as compared to control group. Hepatic antioxidant activity remained unchanged in both herbal extract treatment groups.
In the present study administration of C. intybus and C. scolymus at 30 THD to carbon tetrachloride intoxicated rats, prevents liver intoxication and ameliorates liver histopathological changes without influence on hepatic antioxidant properties.
