Abstract:

Citrus aurantium from Rutaceae, has been used to treat paroxysmal supraventricular tachicardia, anti spasmodic, but no clinical and experimental studies have been conducted on its effects on the uterus. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of Citrus aurantium aqueous extract on the uterus of rats. Extract was accommodated by sokcele method using 30gr powder and 300ml distill water for 8 hours. Uterus of rats was suspended in an organ bath containing Dejalon at 29oC. Tissue contractility was isometrically recorded under 1gr initial tention. Potassium chloride (60 mM)and barium chloride (4mu/M) and oxytocin (10 mIU/ml) was applied to the tissue in the presence and absence of the extract (1,2.4.8mg/ml). Kcl- induced contraction reduced by the extract in a dose dependent (p<0.05) also Bacl2 and oxytocin indicated this manner. Spasmolytic effect of extract was affected by propranolol (1μM for 5 min) in KCl-induced contractions. It seems that the voltage dependent calcium channels, direct effect on smooth muscle and b-adrenoceptors receptors are involved in the spasmolytic effect of the extract. It appears that this extract induces its inhibitory effects through the blockade of influx calcium.
