Abstract: 

Cisplatin, Platinum co-ordinate complex, is a widely used antineaplastic agent for treatment of metastatic tumors of many tissues. Taurine is an organic acid and serve as an endogenous antioxidant. This study was designed to investigate the protective role of taurine as an endogenous antioxidant against cisplatin induced nephrotoxicity.
Male albino rats (180-220 gr) were divided in to 4 groups (n=8) and treated as follow: (1) saline-treated group (2): cisplatin-treated group (10mg/kg ip) (3): group that received taurine (400mg/kg ip) for 1hr before cisplatin (10mg/kg ip) administration (4): taurine (400mg/kg ip). The animals were killed 7days after treatment and then blood samples were collected.
Results of this study indicated that cisplatin significantly increased Creatinine, Urea and Bilirubin leves as compared to control group. In addition, taurine significantly decreased Creatinine, Urea and Bilirubin levels compared to cisplatin group.
Results of present study suggest that taurine prevents from increasing of Creatinine, Urea and Bilirubin levels, assisted by cisplatin that may be due to its antioxidant properties.
