Abstract: 

The treatment of patients stung by scorpion (Hemiscorpius lepturus) is much complicated due to unknown mechanism of the venom of this species. Hemiscorpius lepturus is medically important scorpion species present in the south and southwestern part of Iran, causing morbidity and mortality in children and adults. In the present study 15 healthy male rabbits weight 2±0.25 kg were divided in to 3 groups. H.lepturus venom was injected subcutaneously in all the rabbit’s venom. Group 1 received 50 μg/kg, group 2 received 500 μg/kg and group 3 received 1500 μg/kg of venom. Electrocardiogram and cardiac enzymes including g CK, CPK, LDH levels were studied in all the groups before and after receiving the venom. Results of present study reveals that no significant changes occurred in Electrocardiogram obtained in groups 1. However results ofECG in groups 2 and 3 indicate the changes such as erythema sinus, sinus bradykardy with severe bradykardy. In group 1 of rabbits no significant changes were observed in CK, CPK and LDH levels. However 500 μg/kg of the venom injection in group 2 rabbits caused significant elevation in CK, CPK and LDH levels. On the other hand group 3 rabbits which received 1500 μg/kg of the venom showed a highly significant (p<0.01) increase in cardiac enzymes after venom injection. On the bases of the results obtained in this study and our previous works it can be concluded that the effect of H. lepturus venom on cardiac tissue is through mechanism other than the mechanism of scorpions in buthidae family.
