Abstract:

Aflatoxins are a group of mycotoxins that are secondary metabolites of various species of Aspergillus. These toxins have very potent hepatotoxic, carcinogenic and mutagenic properties. The major aflatoxins consist of B1, B2, G1, G2, M1 and M2. Because of aflatoxins importance in human being's health as a hepatocarcinogenic agent, in last three decades many researches in the world have been focused on aflatoxins. The aim of this study was an investigation on occurrence of aflatoxins of Ardabil, Iran.
Total 180 samples (90 milk and 90 meat samples) were collected during four seasons from local markets in Ardabil. Milk samples were defatted and analyzed by ELISA method to determination of aflatoxin M1 levels. For meat samples total aflatoxin were extracted by solvents and then were analyzed by ELISA method.
All of the milk samples were contaminated with aflatoxin M1 but this contamination was higher than 50ppt, MTL accepted by European community, in spring and winter seasons. In summer and autumn season aflatoxin M1 levels were lower than MTL. Meat samples except three samples contaminated with aflatoxins. Total aflatoxin levels in meat samples were lower than MTL of European community for total aflatoxins (4ppb) in all seasons. Like milk samples, in meat samples also total aflatoxin levels in spring and winter seasons were higher than summer and winter seasons.
Results of current research showed that contamination of milk and meat samples is depending on the type of cattle's feed and the level of contamination during cold months of the year was higher than warm months, when the green pasture composed the major part of their feeds.
