Abstract:

Epilepsy is a common chronic neurological disorder characterized by recurrent unprovaked seizure. Nowadays, there is not certain cure for epilepsy. However, antiepileptic medicatins can control the seizure in 70% of suffering people. Due to the harmful side effects of chemical drugs, finding more effective drugs is so important. The sedative effect of Citrus Aurantium petals and its effect on CNS have been considered in traditional medicine. Citrus Aurantium petals has many chemical copmounds such as flavonoids. It has been shown structure similarity of phenyl ring to antiepileptic drugs such as Phenobarbital and phenytoin. In this study, the antiepileptic effects of citrus aurantium petals hydro-methanolic extract (75, 150, 300, 600mg/kg i.p.) were evaluated on pentylentetrazol (90mg/kg sc) induced chemical seizure. The study was carried out on male wistar rats weighing 200-250g. The results showed that the extract doses (75, 150mg/kg) didn’t prevent the epileptic attack, while (300mg/kg) inhibited seizure latency and decreased seizure duration in male rats. It seems that Citrus Aurantium has effective antiepileptic component, however more investigations are needed in this field.
