Abstract:

Aims: epilepsy is one of the most common neurologic disorders. There are about 40% resistances to current antiepileptic drugs. Moreover, acute and chronic toxicity of currently used antiepileptic drugs render treatment difficult. Cicer arietinum (leguminosae) which has been used traditionally as antiepileptic remedy is evaluted for anticonvulsant activity against experimental seizures.
Materials and methods: a dichloromethane extract was prepared from fruits of the plant by percolation. Different doses of the extract were administered to the mice and ptzinduced clonic seizure occurrence and latency were recorded 30 min thereafter.
Results: the extract protected mice against clonic seizures dose-dependently (ED50= 3g/kg) with no toxic and lethal effects.
Discussion and conclusion: determination of the active anticovulsant constituents of the extract is needed and underway.
