Abstract:

Introduction: Spasmolytic, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of S. hortonsis L. (summer savory) suggest that it may have beneficial effects on colitis. In the present study, the effect of this herbal extract on a model of acute colitis was evaluated.
Materials & Methods: After identifying of plant and assessment of quality control such as essential oil and dry extract percent hydroalcoholic extract of summer savory with doses of 150, 350, 700 mg/kg, prednisolon (2 mg/kg), and 2 ml of vehicle were administered orally for 5 constitutive days before ulcer induction on separate groups of male Wistar rats. Other groups received single doses of vehicle (5 ml/kg), extract (350, 700 mg/kg), or hydrocortisone acetate (10 mg/kg) rectally, 2 hours prior to colitis induction with acetic acid 4% via anus. All rats were sacrificed 24 hours later and the tissue injuries were assessed macroscopically and histopathologically.
Results: Extracts with all doses were effective to reduce colon weight/length ratio. Higher oral doses of extract (350 and 700 mg/kg) were effective to reduce ulcer severity, area and index as well as mucosal inflammatory severity and index compared to control groups. Using single doses of rectally administered extract, (350 and 700 mg/kg) causes significant reduction in tissue injuries both macroscpically and histopathologically.
Discussion: It is concluded that summer savory hydroalcoholic extract was effective to protect against experimental acute colitis and the efficacy was similar to reference groups when higher doses of extract were administered orally and/or rectally.
