Abstract: 

Vaginal mucus cytology is influenced by hormonal changes during different phases of estrus cycle. This research is designed to study the changes of different kinds and the percentage of the epithelial cells of the external region of the uterine cervix in different stage of estrus cycle in Holstein cows. Vaginal mucus samples were collected from 6 Holstein cows, stained by papsmear technique and studied by microscopic evaluation of mucus smear.
Results showed that the vaginal cytology changes are associated with the stages of estrus cycle. It is concluded that cytological evaluation of vaginal smear can be useful for determination of different phases of estrus cycle. Hormonal changes during the estrus cycle affect the epithelial cells appearance in vaginal mucus. Therefore by vaginal mucus analysis it can be possible to evaluate the dairy cow reproductive tract function.
