Abstract: 

Background: The widespread use of electric power results in exposure of humans to low level 50/60 Hz electric and magnetic fields. Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (EC 1.1.1.49) is the first enzyme in pentose phosphate metabolic pathway. One product of this pathway is NADPH molecule that important in much functions of body. This molecule defenses body from molecules that produce oxidative stress. The aim of this investigation was to study effect of electromagnetic field (EMF) with 50 Hz frequency and 50, 100 and 250 MicroTesla intensity on erythrocyte Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) activity of mice.
Method and Material: In this experimental study 32 male mice weighing 30±5 g were divided into four groups each of eight animals. The treatment groups exposure to 50, 100 and 250 MicroTesla intensity EMF with frequency 50 Hz for two hour per day during thirty days. The control group was in the similar situation without exposure to EMF. The blood samples were taken after thirty days. G6PD activity was determined at 37oC by kinetic method. Absorbance changes were measured in 340 nm by eppendorf ECOM-E 6125 spectrophotometer. The data were analyzed by spss (version 11.5) computer software.
Results: Mice erythrocyte G6PD activity in groups expose to 50, 100 and 250 microTesla intensity EMF with frequency 50 Hz increased 8%, 9% and 31% to control group respectively. No significant differences were detected in G6PD activity between expose groups and control group.
Conclusion: In this study, 50, 100 and 250 MicroTesla intensity EMF with 50 Hz frequency did not affect the mice erythrocyte G6PD activity. G6PD is an important enzyme of system defenses body from oxidative stress.
