Abstract:

The use of some cosmetic drugs can cause skin injuries. The irritation skin test is a useful method for evaluating these effects on skin. In this study we determined the effects of some drugs (permethrin, pyrithion, piroxicam, chlolorhexidine, clobetasol, flocinolone and betadine) on the skin of albino rabbit. Degree of erythema and edema, in the shaved area where the drugs were applied, was assessed after 24, 48 and 72 hours on the basis of standardized Draize test (the draize primary skin Irritation test). Severity of inflammatory reaction was measured using PII (Primary Irritation Index) which measures the sum of erythema and edema during the above period (normal saline = Negative control, histamine 2 % = positive control).
Our Results shows that permethrin and flocinolone caused mild irritation (PII<2), pyrithion caused moderate irritation (2<PII<5) and other drugs had no effects on the skin of albino rabbit.
