Abstract:

Medicinal plants utilization as remedies has long history. Improvement of chemical and synthetic drugs increased many side effects that causes high tendency for use of medicinal plants. In Iran also we can find a large number of researches in this field of biology and medicine. The purpose of this study was identifying the quantity and direction of researches (theses and dissertations) in two large khorassan universities and making available this information for researchers involving in this field of investigations. in this study, referring to the libraries of the ferdowsi university of mashhad (fum) and mashhad university of medical sciences (mums), all theses and dissertations in the fields of physiological and pharmacological effects of plants from 1981 till 2008 were recorded and categorized. from 380 recognized subjects, 299 from faculty of pharmacy, 45 from faculty of medicine, 28 from faculty of basic sciences, 4 from faculty of agriculture and 4 from faculty of veterinary medicine. Research fields and their percentages were as follows: antibacterial: 27.89% nervous: 13.95%, antioxidant: 12.1%, toxicity: 11.84% respiratory: 7.37%, blood and circulation: 7.37%, analgesic and anti-inflammatory: 6.58%, integument and hair: 5%, musculoskeletal: 4.47%, gastrointestinal: 3.95%, genital: 1.58%, urinary 0.79% and antiparasitic: 0.52%. According to results, the most percentage of investigations is related to anti bacterial (and antiviral) and the less is related to antiparasitic effects of plants. in this research we tried to find the reasons and factors influencing these distribution and directions of researches.
