Abstract:

Introduction: For many years, in traditional medicine oral mixture of Echium amoenum and Citrus auranti folia are used for treatment of cardiac arythmia. There is not any survey by the scientists yet. In the present study we tested the hypothesis that this oral combination use of these herbal drugs may lead to improvement of heart beat in male rat.
Materials and methods: Rats were divided to 10 groups: control group, groups 2,3,4 and 5 that orally administrated different dosage of Echium amoenum (2/4/8/12 gr/100mlwater), in 6th group we orally administrated Citrus auranti folia (5gr/100mlwater) combinable groups ( groups (7, 8, 9, 10) that orally administrated the combination of these drugs (2/4/8/12 gr/100 ml water of Echium amoenum and 5gr/100ml water of Citrus auranti folia. Heart rate was measured noninvasively by tail before and after phenylephrine infusion.
Results: use of Echium amoenum and Citrus auranti folia decreased the heart rate after phynylephrine infusion. The maximum effect belonged to groups 6 and 7. And also there was a clear difference between the control group and treatment groups in basic heart rate (P<0.05). Indeed the effect of heart rate decreasing in control groups was more than the effect of phenylephrine.
Conclusion: the result of this study suggests that the usage of these herbal drugs can beneficial for decreasing the heart rate.
