Abstract:

The dried leaves of Cuminum cyminum (Apiaceae) were collected in July 2007 from east Azerbayjan. Its essential oil was obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed by GC/MS. The major components were cuminal (29.0%). 1- phenyl-5-hexen-1-ol (27.6%), g-terpinene (10.8%), pcymene (7.3%) and beta-pinene (6.5%). Antibacterial activity of the water and ethanolic extracts were studied on five pathogenic bacteria. The water extract showed no activity, but the ethanolic extracts (30%) showed activity on S. aureus, S. epidermidis, E. coli, B. subtillis, and (15%) on P. aeroginosa.
