CARDIOPROTECTIVE EFFECTS OF NATURAL HONEY AGAINST REPERFUSION-INDUCED ARRHYTHMIAS IN ISOLATED RAT HEART

Abstract

In the present work, potential cardioprotective effects of NATURAL HONEY against REPERFUSION-induced ARRHYTHMIAS including number of ventricular ectopic beats (VEBs), number, duration and incidence of ventricular tachycardia (VT), duration and incidence of ventricular fibrillation (VF) were investigated in isolated rat heart. The ISOLATED HEARTs were divided into five groups and perfused with Krebs-Henseleit (K/H) solution after mounting on a langendorff apparatus. In control group, normal K/H was perfused during 30 min regional ischemia followed by 30 min REPERFUSION while in the test groups, the hearts were perfused by 0.125, 0.25, 0.5 and 1% of honey-enriched K/H solution during ischemia and REPERFUSION. The ECGs were analyzed to determine cardiac ARRHYTHMIAS. Perfusion of honey (0.25, 0.5, 1%) reduced duration and incidence of VF (p<0.05 for all). Honey (0.125%) produced greater reduction in VF duration (p<0.01). Honey (0.125, 0.25 and 0.5%) lowered significantly the number of VT (p<0.05). Additionally, the number of VEBs were decreased by 0.125, 0.25 and 0.5 % honey (p<0.05, p<0.01 and p<0.01, respectively). Application of 0.125 and 0.25% of honey had clearly significant reduction on duration of VT (p<0.05 and p<0.01, respectively). Also incidence of VT was reduced by 0.25% honey (p<0.05). For the first time, our results showed that NATURAL HONEYprotected isolated rat hearts against REPERFUSION-induced ARRHYTHMIAS. Antiarrhythmic effects of honey were reversely related to the concentration so that 0.25 and 0.5% were optimum concentrations in our study.
