Abstract: 

In a series of studies pulmonary function tests and (PFT) airway responsiveness (AR) of sulfur mustard (SM) exposed human (chemichal war victims (CWV) of Iraq-Iran conflict) were examined. Tracheal responsiveness (TR), pathological changes, total and differential white Blood Cell (WBC) count and serum and lung lavage cytokines of SM exposed (SME) guinea pigs was also examined. The preventive effect of vitamine E, dexamethazone and the extract of Nigella sativa on tracheal responsiveness and lung inflammation of SME animals was studied. Finaly the effect of the extract of Nigella sativa on PFT and respiratory symptoms of CWV was studied (a two month period study). The resluts showed significant reduction in PFT and increased AR in CWV. Animal study also showed increased TR, total WBC eosinophil, pathological changes of the lung and cytokines but reduction of lymphocytes in SME animals. Treated SME animals with vitamin E, dexamethazone and the extract of Nigella sativa lead to improvement in TR, total and differential WBC, pathological and cytokies changes. Administration of the extract of Nigella sativa on CWV for two monthes also caused siginificnt improvement in PFT and respiratory symptoms of these subjects.
