Abstract: 

Airway inflammation is the most characterized pathological feature in asthma. The effect of two natural adjuvants on tracheal responsiveness and white blood cells (WBC) of lung lavage of sensitized guinea pigs were examined. The responses of guinea pig tracheal chains, WBC count and differential WBC of lung lavage were examined in control and 4 groups of guinea pigs including: sensitized animals (S) , sensitized animals treated with adjuvant PC, G2 and both adjuvants (S+PC, S+G2 and S+PCG2, respectively) (n=6). Sensitization of animals was done by injection and inhalation of ovalbumin (OA). The results showed increased tracheal responsiveness to methacholine, WBC count, eosinophil, neutrophil and basophil and decrease in lymphocyte in lung lavage of sensitized compared to control group (p<0.05). However G2 adjuvant and the combination of G2 and PC caused significant reduction in tracheal responsiveness (p<0.05). In addition, both adjuvants caused significant preventive effect on changes in WBC count (p<0.001 for both cases). Both adjuvants and their combination also caused significant preventive effect on changes in eosinophil, neutrophil and basophil in lung lavage of sensitized animals (p<0.05). These results indicate therapeutic effects of two natural adjuvants and their combination (specially G2 adjuvant) on tracheal responsiveness and WBC of lung lavage of sensitized guinea pigs.
