Abstract: 
Nowadays, polymeric gels have found diverse applications. These gels despite of having numerous advantages, suffer from poor mechanical properties in some applications. Current research has shown that the mechanical properties in polymeric gels improve significantly by adding layered silicate nano-organclay in it. In this work, nanocomposite hydrogels based on polyvinyl alcohol containing unmodified and modified montmorillonite were prepared by cyclic freezing-thawing process and their structure and mechanical properties have been investigated. The results indicate that the nanocomposite hydrogels having intercalated structures, also show the amount of gelation, the elastic modulus, elongation-at-break and hardness of nanocompostie hydrogels have increased in comparison with pure hydrogels, while their ultimate tensile strength has decreased.
