Abstract: 
Epoxy resins are widely used as adhesives, coatings and matrices for composites due to their desired mechanical and physical properties. Their inherent brittleness, however, is a major problem against their industrial growth. Addition of a second rubber phase has been found as the best approach to overcome this problem. Incorporation of ground rubber tires in an epoxy formulation has been considered in the current investigation. The results of this study illustrate that, although these rubber particles are not as effective as conventional rubber modifiers, the blending of the two yields higher fracture toughness values at lower cost. Principles of linear elastic fracture mechanics are incorporated to measure fracture toughness in this study. Fracture behavior and toughening mechanisms are investigated by scanning electron and transmission optical microscopy techniques.
