EFFECT OF COMBINED AEROBIC EXERCISE ON SERUM LEVEL OF LIVER GAMMA GLUTAMIL TRANSFERASE AND GLYCEMIC INDEX OF MIDDLE-AGED DIABETIC WOMEN

Abstract: 

Introduction: Diabetic hepatophaty has been investigated by many researchers. Recently, the role of regular exercise has been considered to prevent it. So, this study was performed with aim to evaluate the effect of combined aerobic exercise on serum level of liver gamma-glutamil transferase (GGT) and glycemic index (insulin, insulin resistance, fasting and two-hour glucose) in middle-aged diabetic women.
Methods: This semi-experimental study was performed on 30 women with type 2 diabetes in Behbahan city. They were randomly divided into two groups of cases and control. The subjects in the experimental group performed 12 weeks exercise (3 days a week with an intensity of 55-70% maximal heart rate for 35-50 min per session) has been trained. At the beginning of the study and 48 hours after that, blood sample was taken to measure GGT, insulin, insulin resistance, fasting and two-hour glucose. Data analysis was performed using SPSS software (version 18), and Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, independent t-test and loan test. P<0.05 was considered significant.
Results: 12 weeks aerobic training was not significantly effective on serum insulin levels of the subjects (P?0.05), while it has significant effect on insulin resistance, GGT, fasting glucose and two-hour glucose (P?0.05).
Conclusion: The aerobic training in type 2 diabetic patients reduces resistance insulin and also, the rate of liver enzyme GGT which is the sign of liver cell damage is reduced following decreased resistance insulin and blood glucose that is the sign of relative improvement of liver status in women with type 2 diabetes.
