Abstract:

Drug abuse is a phenomenon with social, cultural and economic dimensions. This problem has affected a large part of the workforce in many countries. Because of the people’s great sensitivity, prevention of this social problem should be a priority in our social policies. This action, however, requires recognition of the current situation and their related factors. Dependency-proneness can be defined as a concept involving attitudinal and other factors related to addiction, whose assessment can help policymakers to grasp a picture of current situation and show them points suitable for intervention. So far, we didn’t have a reliable and valid tool which can measure dependency-proneness among Iranian youth. Item-pool was designed based on previous studies and was administered on 510 students of universities, who were selected with a multistage sampling across the country.
Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was used to determine the reliability of the entire tool and for determining validity of items, we used exploratory factor analysis with Varimax rotation. After the initial exploratory factor analysis on 108 questions, 38 items in the model remained which loaded on 5 factors. These 5 factores explained about 60 percent of variance of the whole construct. Cronbach’s alpha for the total amount of items was 0.780. Size and diversity of participants, acceptable results of validation, and the relative shortness of Dependency-Proneness Questionnaire (DPQ) made it an appropriate tool for measuring this construct among Iranian young people.
